The Listening Game

Most people do not listen. They wait for their turn to talk. Watch any group of cousins on Eid, or any classroom after the bell. Mouths open, ears closed. Today you learn a small skill that almost no one practises, and that almost everyone wishes other people had. It is called the listening loop.

Here is what it looks like in real life. Your cousin Bilal says, my football team lost the match yesterday and the captain blamed me. You repeat: so the team lost and the captain put the blame on you. Then you ask: do you think the captain was being fair, or do you think something else was going on. That is one full loop. You did not solve anything. You just made Bilal feel heard. He will keep talking, because for the first time someone is actually listening.

A warning. Do not parrot. Repeating word for word like a tota sounds rude, like you are mocking. Use your own words. If your sister says, I am tired of cleaning the table every night, do not say back, you are tired of cleaning the table every night, that is parrot. Say, sounds like the table chore is feeling unfair. That is paraphrase. Same idea, your voice.

Why this matters for your life. People remember who listened to them. They do not always remember who solved their problem. They never forget who actually heard them. Twenty years from now, when Bilal is choosing a partner for a business or a wedding, the cousin who really listened in Class 4 will come to mind first. Listening is a quiet investment that pays for decades.
