The Cover Letter

There is more than one way to understand this. If you have only been taught one, you have been taught less than you deserve.
There is more than one way to understand this. If you have only been taught one, you have been taught less than you deserve.
A cover letter is the short message you attach to your CV that says why you in particular, for this role in particular, at this company in particular. Most Pakistani applicants either skip it, or send the same paragraph to every job, or write a five-page essay that opens with their date of birth. None of these get read. A working cover letter has three short paragraphs and fits on half a page. Hiring managers spend less than thirty seconds on it. Build it for thirty seconds.
Paragraph one, two sentences. Why this job, why now. Sentence one, what role you are applying for and how you found it. Sentence two, the single strongest reason you are right for it. Example. I am writing to apply for the junior data analyst role posted on Rozee.pk on 18 April. Two years of cleaning sales data for a Karachi distributor taught me Excel and SQL well enough to ship a dashboard in a week.
Paragraph two, three to four sentences. Proof. Pick the two strongest facts from your CV and turn each into a small story with a number in it. Avoid restating the bullet from your CV; expand it. If your CV says, grew Instagram following from 800 to 4,200 in five months, then the cover letter says, the post that worked best was a Saturday morning recipe video; we tested four formats and the recipe one had three times the saves. The CV gives the score; the cover letter gives the play that won the match.
Paragraph three, two sentences. The close. Sentence one, what you would like to do for them in the first thirty days if hired. Sentence two, your availability and contact preference. Example. In my first month I would clean the existing sales reports and propose two improvements that save the team an hour a week. I am available for a call any weekday after 4 pm Pakistan time and can be reached at 0312 1234567 or sara.malik at gmail. The first sentence makes the manager picture you in the role. The second one makes you easy to schedule.
Final tone note. The cover letter is not a place for shayari, for nationalism, for an apology about the country's electricity, or for an explanation of why your CGPA dipped in 2023. None of these belong here. They belong in the interview, where you can tell the story properly with your face and your voice. The cover letter is the door. The interview is the room. Do not move the furniture from the room into the door; nobody can walk through.
