Pakistan loses around fifteen hundred people a year to electrical accidents at home. Most of those deaths are preventable, and they happen for the same handful of reasons: somebody tried to fix a switch with the mains still on, somebody plugged too many appliances into one extension, somebody touched a wet hand to a live point, somebody trusted a loose plug for one more day. This lesson is the difference between being one of those statistics and not.
UPS and generator combine in a way that fools people into thinking the mains is off. When K-Electric load sheds at 1pm, your home stays bright because the UPS kicked in. Touch any wire in the wall now and you still get shocked, because the UPS is feeding the same wires. Same with a petrol or diesel generator on transfer switch. Switching off the mains breaker outside is not enough; you must also switch off the UPS at its own panel and the generator at its own ignition. Three switches, three checks, every time.
Loose plug equals fire. The reason is simple. When a plug fits its socket loosely, the contact point is tiny, the resistance is high, and the current heats that contact point until the plastic around it melts and ignites. You will see a brown stain on the wall socket weeks before the fire. You will smell something faintly hot and sweet in the room. The plug will be warm to the touch when you pull it out. Any one of those is a sign to stop using that socket today, and to call a tested electrician (not a beldaar with a pair of pliers) tomorrow.
Extension cords are where most home fires start. The math is straightforward. A typical Pakistani extension cord is rated to carry six amps; that means it can safely run a fan, two phone chargers, and a laptop. The moment you plug a 1500 watt water heater rod, an iron, or an electric kettle into it, you are pushing twelve to fifteen amps through a wire built for six. The wire heats up. The plastic softens. Some night while you sleep, it ignites. Heaters, irons, kettles, water heaters, and ACs always plug directly into a wall socket, never into an extension.
If somebody is being shocked, do not grab them. Their muscles are locked on the wire and if you touch them, you join them. Switch off the mains breaker first, every single time. If you cannot reach the breaker, separate them from the source with something dry and non conducting: a wooden chair, a plastic broom handle, a thick rolled up newspaper. Push, do not pull. Once they are clear, lay them down on their back, check if they are breathing, call 1122 (Rescue) or 115 (Edhi). If they are not breathing and you have learned CPR, start it.
