Walk past any mehndi night before a wedding in Lahore or Multan and you will see one of the oldest computer programs in the world running quietly on the back of a hand. Mehndi is a folk geometry. Every loop, every dot, every curving vine is built out of a small set of basic shapes repeated, rotated, and mirrored. The girl applying the henna is doing in real time what a computer graphics card does, drawing patterns by following rules. She has just compiled the rules into her hand instead of into silicon.
There are four building blocks in classical mehndi. The dot. The line. The teardrop. The spiral. Every motif you have ever seen on a hand at a Pakistani mehndi is some combination of these four. A flower is six teardrops arranged around a centre dot. A vine is a long spiral with small teardrops branching off at regular distances. A peacock is one big spiral becoming a body, with smaller teardrops rising as feathers. Once you see the four building blocks, you cannot stop seeing them.
Iteration is the third secret. Iteration is the technical word for doing the same step again with a small change each time. A spiral is iteration. A row of dots growing larger is iteration. A vine where each leaf is slightly bigger than the last is iteration. Programmers call this a for loop. Mehndi artists call this just how a vine grows. Both are right. The growth of a real vine in nature uses the same maths the artist uses. That is why the design feels alive even though it is just dye on skin.
