Pakistan is running out of water. Not in some distant future. Now, in your lifetime, with numbers already on the table. The Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources has warned for years that per capita water availability has fallen from about 5,260 cubic metres in 1951 to under 1,000 cubic metres today. The line for absolute scarcity is 500 cubic metres. We are walking towards it.

Almost all of Pakistan's fresh water comes from one system, the Indus and its five tributaries. The Indus itself starts in Tibet and is fed by glaciers in the Karakoram and Himalayas. Roughly 70 to 80 percent of its annual flow comes from snow and glacier melt. This is the engine that waters Punjab and Sindh, fills tubewells in Balochistan, and ultimately decides whether bread is on the table.

Where does the water go. About 90 percent of Pakistan's fresh water is used in agriculture. Most of that goes to four crops, sugarcane, rice, cotton, and wheat. Sugarcane and rice are extremely thirsty. Pakistan grows them in regions where the water table has already collapsed, and exports a portion of them, which means the country is effectively exporting its groundwater. Domestic and industrial use together account for less than 10 percent. So the choices that matter most are agricultural choices, made by farmers, traders, and ministries, not by you turning off the tap while you brush.

There are real solutions, not slogans. Drip and sprinkler irrigation can cut farm water use by 30 to 50 percent. Switching from flood irrigation of rice to direct seeded rice saves enormous water. Lining the unlined parts of canals stops up to a third of water lost to seepage. Pricing canal water above zero would change every farmer's calculation overnight. Each of these is technically known. Each is politically hard, because every change has somebody whose income depends on the old way.

Climate change makes everything harder and faster. Hotter summers mean glaciers melt sooner and faster. Monsoon patterns are shifting, with more rain falling in fewer days, which causes floods like 2022 in Sindh, while leaving long dry stretches in between. The 2022 floods displaced 33 million people. They were a preview, not a one off event.

Today's exercise. Find the latest IRSA water release figures for your province this season. They are published weekly and quoted in Dawn and The News. Compare this season to the same week last year. Then look up your city's water supply hours in your zone, ask a parent or check the WASA or KWSC notice. Write a one paragraph summary that connects the upstream river data to the tap in your kitchen. That connection is the start of literate citizenship on water.
