The Search Bar

The search bar is the most powerful single tool on the internet. It looks like a simple white box with the word Google or YouTube above it. You type a few words, press enter, and within one second a list of answers appears. Behind that one second, a computer in California has searched through billions of websites and chosen the ones it thinks you wanted. Whether you actually got the answer you needed depends almost entirely on the words you typed. Good searching is a skill, like cooking daal. The same ingredients in different hands give very different results.

The first rule of searching, be specific. The bad search is two words long, like Pakistan history or science homework. Google has a billion pages on Pakistan history. It does not know what you actually want. The good search is six to ten words long. Instead of Pakistan history, try when did Quaid e Azam give the Lahore resolution speech. Instead of science homework, try how does the heart pump blood for class 7 student. The longer your question, the more Google can narrow down to the one page that actually answers it. Treat the search bar like an old uncle who needs the full context before giving advice.

Searching with a photo. The little camera icon inside the Google search bar is one of the most underused tools in Pakistan. Tap it, point your camera at almost anything, and Google will identify it. Use it to find the name of a flower in your dadi's garden. Use it to read the small text on a medicine bottle. Use it on a torn page of your science textbook to find the same diagram online in colour. Use it on a homework question your father set in his old neat handwriting, and Google will read the handwriting and let you search the question word by word. The camera search is a window into anything you cannot type.

Searching with your voice. The little microphone icon in the search bar lets you speak your question instead of typing. This is a blessing for grandparents who never learned to type, and a time saver for students whose hands are full while cooking or walking. Tap the mic, wait for the small wave to appear, and speak clearly. You can speak in English or Urdu, and you can switch in the middle, the way most Pakistanis naturally talk. Try it on your dadi the first time and watch her face. The phone, which she never trusted, suddenly does what she has been doing for sixty years, listening to a question and pointing at the answer.

The most important habit, doubt the first answer. The first result is not always the right one. Some websites pay Google to appear at the top, marked with a small word Sponsored or Ad. Other websites are simply old or wrong. Open two or three of the top results and compare them. If three different websites say the same thing, you can probably trust it. If they say three different things, look for a government website (the address ends in dot gov dot pk), or a school textbook scan, or a major newspaper like Dawn or Geo. The internet is a giant bazaar. Some shops are honest, some are not. Search well and choose carefully.
