There is more than one way to understand this. If you have only been taught one, you have been taught less than you deserve.
There is more than one way to understand this. If you have only been taught one, you have been taught less than you deserve.
The talk ends, the questions begin, and many speakers fall apart in the next three minutes. The talk is rehearsed; the questions are not. A question can be friendly, hostile, off-topic, or impossible to answer. Most Pakistani classrooms train students for none of these. They train for the talk and stop. Today we fix that. Question handling is a separate skill from speaking. It can be learned in one lesson and practiced in twenty.
I do not know is a complete answer. School trains us to fear those four words because exam culture treats them as failure. Speaking culture is different. Audiences trust speakers who can say I do not know more than speakers who invent answers. The cleanest version: I do not know, but I will find out and email you by Friday. That sentence wins more respect than a guessed answer that turns out to be wrong. Imran Khan in his early speaking years used a version of it often, and people noticed.
Redirect, do not fight. If a question is off-topic, do not lecture the person about being off-topic. Use the bridge phrase: that is an interesting point, the closest thing in my talk was X, let us go there. The audience hears a confident speaker keeping the room on track. The questioner does not feel slapped down. This is especially useful with older relatives at family gatherings who treat every speech like a debate they have decided to win.
When to push back politely. Sometimes a question contains a wrong fact. Letting it pass is dishonest. The right move is the gentle correction: you are right that X, but actually Y in this case, and here is one source. The opening you are right that X earns you the right to disagree on the next clause. Most Pakistani audiences, including older ones, respect a young person who corrects a fact this way; they do not respect one who corrects a fact rudely.
End thought. Question handling is improvisation, but it has scripts. Memorize three: thank you, that is a good question; I do not know, I will find out; that is interesting, the closest thing in my talk was. With these three openers ready, ninety percent of school and cohort questions become manageable in the first five seconds. The remaining ten percent are the ones that teach you the most. Welcome those.
