There is more than one way to understand this. If you have only been taught one, you have been taught less than you deserve.
There is more than one way to understand this. If you have only been taught one, you have been taught less than you deserve.
When you start earning, the first call you make is usually to your mother. The first transfer you make is also usually to her. Maybe also to a younger sister at university in Lahore, or a father whose retirement is short by a few thousand rupees. Sending money to family is the most repeated financial transaction in a Pakistani builder's life. Get the rails right early, because every wrong transfer costs either fees or trust.
Inside Pakistan, four rails dominate. First, bank to bank transfer using IBAN through online banking; usually free for amounts under 25,000 rupees, and a small fee above. Second, Easypaisa, owned by Telenor and Bank Alfalah; you load your wallet from any retail shop and send to any CNIC instantly. Third, JazzCash, owned by Jazz; same model. Fourth, Raast, the State Bank's instant payment rail launched in 2021, which is free, instant, and now built into every major bank app. Use Raast as the default. Use Easypaisa or JazzCash when the receiver does not have a bank account.
From abroad to Pakistan, the picture is different. The Roshan Digital Account is the State Bank's premium product for overseas Pakistanis, launched in 2020. Your overseas brother opens an RDA from Dubai, Toronto, or London in fifteen minutes online without flying back. He links it to his foreign address and CNIC. He can then send dollars or pounds straight into a Pakistani rupee account at the official interbank rate, with the full forex amount disclosed, and zero fee for amounts above the small minimum. The dollars hit your account the same day. RDA balances also earn higher PLS and have access to Naya Pakistan Certificates, the sovereign instrument paying around 9 percent in dollars.
What about hawala. Hawala is the informal channel that has moved money across Muslim countries for a thousand years. A man in Dubai gives 1,000 dirhams to a hawaladar; a man in Lahore gives the equivalent rupees to your mother the same evening; the two hawaladars settle accounts later. The rate is sometimes better than the official rate, and the system is fast. The system is also illegal in Pakistan under the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act, untraceable, and unprotected. If your hawaladar disappears with the money, you have no court to go to. Polymath teaches you to use the legal channels: RDA, Western Union, MoneyGram, Wise (where allowed), or direct bank transfer. The few rupees you save with hawala are not worth the risk to your family or your tax record.
Setting up the rail with your family takes one afternoon. Sit with your mother, take her CNIC, open or verify her bank account, save her IBAN in your phone with the label Ammi Bank. Save your sister's IBAN with the label Bahin Hostel. Save your father's. Test each rail with 100 rupees the first time, confirm it landed, then label it as proven. Now whenever someone calls in need, you transfer in twenty seconds without thinking, without fees, with a record. This is what financial khudi looks like in family form.
