Lesson 2

Your First Bank Account

If you do not have a bank account in your own name with your own CNIC, you do not control your money. You depend on a parent, an older sibling, or a shopkeeper friend who owes you favours. That dependency was fine when …

There is more than one way to understand this. If you have only been taught one, you have been taught less than you deserve.

There is more than one way to understand this. If you have only been taught one, you have been taught less than you deserve.

If you do not have a bank account in your own name with your own CNIC, you do not control your money. You depend on a parent, an older sibling, or a shopkeeper friend who owes you favours. That dependency was fine when you were fifteen. It stops being fine the moment you start earning. The first move toward financial khudi is a bank account in your own name.

The State Bank of Pakistan made this easy in 2015 by introducing the Asaan Account. Asaan means easy. The minimum balance requirement is zero rupees, the documentation is just your CNIC, and almost every bank in Pakistan offers it: UBL, HBL, Meezan, Bank Alfalah, Allied, MCB, Bank Al Habib, JS, Faysal, Soneri. You do not need to walk into the most marble lined branch in the city. The smaller branch closer to your home will treat you better.

Three things to ask the bank officer when you sit down with them. First: kya minimum balance hai? For an Asaan account it should be zero. Second: kya monthly fee hai? It should also be zero, but some banks try to slip in an SMS alert charge of fifty to a hundred rupees a month. Third: kya online banking aur debit card free hai? Insist on the free debit card. Without it your account is half useful.

Roshan Digital Account is a separate category, designed for overseas Pakistanis. If you have a brother in Dubai, an aunt in Toronto, or a cousin in Manchester, an RDA in their name lets them send you remittances directly into a Pakistani account at the official rate, without going through hawala or a money exchange. The account opens online from outside Pakistan in fifteen minutes. We will spend a full lesson on this in lesson five. For now, just know it exists.

After your account opens, three things happen on the first day. You will receive a welcome letter with your account number and IBAN. Save the IBAN somewhere safe; this is what people will use to send you money. You will be set up with online banking; choose a strong password and never share the OTP with anyone, including someone claiming to be from the bank. You will get your debit card a week later by courier. Until then, the bank will give you a temporary cheque book. Do not lose it.
