Deadlines And Buffer

There is a rule that almost every adult learns the hard way, and almost every student gets to learn early if they pay attention. Whatever time you think a thing will take, it will take more. Not sometimes. Almost always. The honest planner doubles the estimate before showing it to anyone. We call this the 50 percent buffer rule, and in Pakistan it is closer to 100 percent.

Why so much extra. Because Pakistani reality has its own physics. Load shedding eats two hours just when the printer is finally working. The bandh on Mall Road delays the cake by 90 minutes. Monsoon turns a 20 minute rickshaw ride into a 70 minute one with wet shalwars. Your laptop charger stops working the night before submission. None of this is your fault. All of it is your responsibility to plan around.

Here is the trick that makes this real. Write down two dates. The internal deadline, which you tell yourself, and the external deadline, which is the one the teacher or chacha or client actually expects. Internal is at least one day before external. If you finish on the internal date, you have one day of buffer. If you slip, you still hit the external date. People who only have one date in their head almost always slip.

Today's habit. Take any deadline you have this week. Write your honest estimate. Multiply by 1.5. Then subtract one full day from the external deadline to make your internal deadline. Tell one person. That person becomes your buffer guard. This is how shipped people live, and shipped people are the only kind whose work touches the world.
