Lesson 8

The Real Shipped Thing Capstone

Everything in this track has been a rehearsal. The capstone is the performance. Over the next four weeks, you will ship one real thing for one real person who is not in your immediate household. Not a school assignment.…

There is more than one way to understand this. If you have only been taught one, you have been taught less than you deserve.

There is more than one way to understand this. If you have only been taught one, you have been taught less than you deserve.

Everything in this track has been a rehearsal. The capstone is the performance. Over the next four weeks, you will ship one real thing for one real person who is not in your immediate household. Not a school assignment. Not a thing that gets graded. A thing that exists in the world after you are done with it, that somebody outside your home actually wanted, and now has, because of you. This is the line that separates a student from a builder. Cross it.

Pick the project on day one. It must satisfy three rules. One: there is a real human, not a parent, who will receive the result. Two: it can be honestly finished in four weeks of evening and weekend work, no all nighters, no skipping school. Three: you can take a photo of the finished thing. The photo rule kills daydreams. 'I will inspire my mohalla' has no photo. 'I will paint a wall mural for the kiryana shop' has a photo. Pick the one with the photo.

Document week by week. Week one: write the one page plan, the stakeholder map, and the task breakdown. Take a photo of all three on paper, even if it is messy handwriting. Week two: do the first half of the work, send a status update to your mentor every Sunday evening. Week three: hit the midpoint, take photos of partial progress, do a small course correction in writing. Week four: deliver, photograph, write the post mortem within five days. Eight artefacts in total. The artefacts are the proof.

On day 28, you will know something most adults do not know. You will know what it feels like to make a small useful thing exist, on time, for somebody who did not have to be nice to you. That feeling does not fade. It also does not arrive any other way. There is no book, no video, no lecture that gives it to you. Only shipping does. Pick the project today. Open your notebook today. Begin.
