Division is sharing fairly. When the cousins come over and your mother brings out one big degh of biryani, the question is simple: how much for each plate. If the degh holds 24 plates of food and 8 people are eating, then 24 divided by 8 equals 3 plates each.

Division has two parts: how many groups, and how many in each group. If you ask how many groups, you write 24 divided by 3 plates per group equals 8 people. If you ask how many in each group, you write 24 divided by 8 people equals 3 plates per person. Same numbers, different question.

Long division on paper is just repeated subtraction made tidy. To divide 96 by 4, ask how many fours fit in 9, that is 2 with 1 left over. Bring down the 6 to make 16. How many fours fit in 16, that is 4. Answer: 24. Check by multiplying: 24 times 4 equals 96. Multiplication and division are mirrors.

Today's habit. Find something at home with more than ten pieces, like dates, almonds, or jalebi. Count the total. Choose how many people will share. Predict the share and the remainder. Now actually share it out. Compare your prediction with reality.
