Geometry is the math of shape and space. Every charpai, every water tank on the roof, every dhol at a wedding, every plot of land is a geometry problem waiting to be measured. Three skills cover most of daily life: area, volume, and circumference.
Area of a rectangle is length times width. A typical charpai is about 6 feet long and 3 feet wide, so its area is 18 square feet. That is the floor space the charpai eats up in your room. If your room is 12 feet by 10 feet, that is 120 square feet, so the charpai takes 18 out of 120, which is 15 percent of the room.
Circumference is the distance around a circle. The formula is pi times diameter, where pi is roughly 3.14. A standard wedding dhol has a head about 50 cm across. The circumference is 3.14 times 50, which is 157 cm. That is exactly how much leather strip you need to wrap the rim once.
Today's habit. Pick one object in your house: a cushion, a tray, a bucket, a bed. Measure it with a tape or a ruler. Compute its area or volume or circumference. Write the answer on a slip and tape it to the object for one day. Each time you walk past, you remember its size in numbers.
