A percentage is a fraction with a fixed bottom number of 100. When Hyperstar puts a 25 percent off sign on a shirt, it means out of every 100 rupees of price, 25 rupees come off. Per cent literally means per hundred. The hundred is hidden but always there.
To take a percentage of a number, multiply the number by the percentage and divide by 100. To find 25 percent of 2000 rupees, do 2000 times 25, which is 50000, then divide by 100, which is 500. So 25 percent of 2000 rupees is 500 rupees.
Exam grades are also percentages. If you score 72 marks out of 90 on a maths paper, the percentage is 72 divided by 90 times 100, which is 80 percent. Boards in Pakistan use percentages because schools have different paper totals. A percentage lets a 75 out of 100 student be compared with a 60 out of 80 student.
Today's habit. Look at one supermarket receipt or one school report card at home. Find one percentage on it. Compute it yourself with paper and pen. Compare to the printed number. If they match, you have the skill. If not, find the gap.
