A fraction is a piece of a whole. Half a roti, a quarter of a melon, one third of a glass of lassi. Fractions tell you exactly how big the piece is compared to the whole thing. The number on top is how many pieces you have. The number on the bottom is how many equal pieces the whole was cut into.

Half is one over two, written as 1 over 2. Quarter is one over four. Three quarters is three over four. The bigger the bottom number, the smaller each piece. One over eight is smaller than one over four, even though eight is bigger than four. This is the rule that surprises beginners.

Mehndi patterns are full of fractions. The artist often divides the palm into halves, then quarters, then eighths, before drawing curls and dots. The same logic appears in cutting a melon for guests, or dividing a parathay into four for small kids. Fraction sense is hand sense.

Today's habit. Cut one roti, one apple, or one paratha for your family. Before cutting, predict what fraction each person will get if everyone takes an equal piece. After cutting, write the fraction next to each piece on a slip of paper. See if your prediction matched the cut.
