Up to this point, the unit of reading has been one piece. One paragraph, one story, one column, one couplet. Real adult reading is different. Real adult reading is many sources on one event, read together, and judged together. This is called cross text synthesis. The skill is not to summarise each source, but to weigh them against each other and produce a single understanding the sources alone cannot give.
Take the floods in Pakistan in summer 2022. The same week, you could read a Dawn news report giving casualty numbers from NDMA, an Express Tribune column blaming poor planning by the federal government, a BBC Urdu feature interviewing displaced families, a UN OCHA situation report with maps and donor needs, and a Twitter thread by a Pakistani climate scientist explaining the role of glacial melt. Five sources, all about the same event, none of them complete on its own. Together they form a picture none of them shows.
Synthesis follows three steps. First, list each source's claim about the event in one sentence. Second, find where two or more sources agree, and where they conflict. Third, write one synthesis sentence that respects the agreements, names the conflicts, and explains why you trust some sources more than others. The third step is the work; the first two are preparation.
Why does this matter for a Pakistani reader. Because every important Pakistani story, from elections to floods to economy, gets reported by sources with very different incentives. State media, private television, foreign press, civil society, social media. None of them is the full story. Synthesis is how a citizen actually understands the country they live in, instead of just inheriting one camp's version.
Today's habit. Pick one current Pakistani news event. Read three sources on it, including at least one Urdu source and at least one foreign source. Write three one sentence claims, then one synthesis sentence. Five minutes of reading, ten minutes of thinking. The sentence you produce is your real news of the day.
