Numbers And Money

Numbers are the first part of any language that pays you back the same week you learn them. The moment you can ask how much, name a price, and count change, you have crossed from tourist to participant. Mandarin numbers are unusually clean. Once you know one to ten, you can build every number up to ninety-nine without learning a new word. Urdu has irregular numbers up to thirty-nine. Mandarin does not. Use that gift.

Now build the rest. Eleven is shí yī, literally ten one. Twelve is shí èr, ten two. Twenty is èr shí, two ten. Thirty-five is sān shí wǔ, three ten five. Ninety-nine is jiǔ shí jiǔ. The pattern never breaks. One hundred is yī bǎi. One thousand is yī qiān. Once you have ten and the multipliers, you can quote a price up to nine thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine without ever feeling lost.

Two essential price questions. Duō shao qián, 多少钱, how much money. Tài guì le, 太贵了, too expensive. Pián yi yī diǎn, 便宜一点, a little cheaper, please. These are the three sentences a vendor at any Yiwu wholesale stall, or any Chinese supplier on a video call from Karachi, expects to hear from a serious buyer. Saying them in Mandarin marks you as a person who has done their homework. Vendors quote sharper prices to people who have done their homework.

A Karachi case study. Faisal runs a small hardware import business in Saddar. Three years ago he placed orders through an English-speaking agent in Guangzhou and paid a ten percent commission on every container. Last year he learned three hundred Mandarin words and started messaging suppliers directly on WeChat. The commission line on his profit and loss disappeared. He still uses the agent for shipping logistics, but the price negotiation is his. Three hundred words. One commission saved. The maths of language learning is rarely this clean, but it is rarely this honest either.
