There is more than one way to understand this. If you have only been taught one, you have been taught less than you deserve.

There is more than one way to understand this. If you have only been taught one, you have been taught less than you deserve.

Hina apa's daughter got into LUMS on full scholarship. The neighbour's son got an Australian student visa last week. Your phupho's son is making four lakhs a month at a Dubai bank. You are sitting in your room in DHA Phase 5 or in a flat in Gulberg or in a hostel in Multan, scrolling, and your stomach is folding in on itself. This feeling has a name. The Quran calls it hasad in its sharp form. We just call it the cousin trap. Either way, you did not make it up. It has been hunting humans for a long time.

Faiz wrote: aur bhi gham hain zamaane mein mohabbat ke siwa, raahatein aur bhi hain wasl ki raahat ke siwa. The world has more sorrows than just love, and more reliefs than just being chosen. The line is usually read as romantic, but it works for the comparison trap too. The world has more measures of a life than a LUMS admission, and more reliefs than a Australian visa. A life that is small by Hina apa's measure can be large by the measure your fifty-year-old self will use. You do not yet know which measure your future will respect. Stop letting today's measure be the only judge.

A practical move. Mute, do not block, the cousin's instagram for two weeks. Muting is not jealousy and it is not bitterness. It is what we call rasta khali karna, clearing the road, so you can walk your own without their headlights in your eyes. After two weeks, check in with yourself. If their progress now feels like inspiration instead of a knife, unmute. If it still cuts, mute another month. There is no rule that says you owe anyone a front row seat to your envy.

If the comparison spiral keeps pulling you down hard enough that you cannot work or sleep, that is no longer just envy. That is depression dressed in cousin's clothes. Call Umang Pakistan at 0311-7786264 and tell them what you just told us. They will not laugh. They have heard this exact pattern from a thousand other Pakistani twenty-somethings this year alone.
