Lesson 2

When Everything Feels Too Much

There is a difference between sadness and depression, and most of us in Pakistan never get taught it. Sadness is a visitor. Your nani passes away, you do not get the scholarship, your best friend gets engaged and moves …

There is more than one way to understand this. If you have only been taught one, you have been taught less than you deserve.

There is more than one way to understand this. If you have only been taught one, you have been taught less than you deserve.

There is a difference between sadness and depression, and most of us in Pakistan never get taught it. Sadness is a visitor. Your nani passes away, you do not get the scholarship, your best friend gets engaged and moves to Karachi. You cry, you feel heavy, and over weeks the weight slowly lifts. Depression is different. It moves in. The sleep stops working, food tastes like nothing, your phone feels like a brick you cannot pick up, and the part of your brain that used to enjoy chai with toast just goes quiet. If that has been your last two weeks or longer, this lesson is for you.

What the first 72 hours look like, if you are reading this and you know something is wrong. Hour zero to twenty-four: tell one safe person. It does not have to be your father. It can be a cousin, a teacher, a Polymath buddy, the warden, anyone whose voice does not make you smaller. Just say, things are not okay with me right now. You do not need to explain. Hour twenty-four to forty-eight: call a helpline. Umang Pakistan 0311-7786264, or Rozan if you are a young woman, or Madadgaar 1098. They will help you breathe, name what is happening, and figure out the next step. Hour forty-eight to seventy-two: if you have any access at all to a doctor, a psychologist, or even a GP at a Sehat Sahulat empanelled hospital, go. A GP is enough for the first appointment.

Two things depression lies to you about, daily. One: it tells you no one will understand. Statistically, in a class of forty Pakistani students, six to eight are sitting with the same shape of darkness right now and saying nothing. You are not the strange one. You are the one who noticed. Two: it tells you this will never lift. With sleep, food, walking outside, one safe person, and either a helpline or a professional, the average depressive episode in a young adult lifts within three to nine months of consistent care. That is not forever. That is one academic semester.

We need to be honest about what we cannot do. We are an education app. We are not a doctor, we are not a psychologist, and we will never replace one. What we can do is sit with you in the dark for the ten minutes it takes you to dial a number. If your stomach is sinking just reading this lesson, that is your body voting. Make the call. The first one is the hardest. Every call after it gets easier.
