A system is a set of parts that affect each other, working together to produce some behaviour over time. The behaviour of the system is rarely the same as any single part. Your body is a system. So is a kitchen at iftar. So is a school. So is a country's economy. The hardest mistake in any field is to look at one part and assume the whole behaves the same way. A doctor who treats only the symptom misses the system. An engineer who fixes only one bridge in a flooded city misses the system. A father who blames only the youngest child for tension at home misses the system. Systems thinking is the discipline of stepping back to see how parts pull on each other.
The clearest system every Pakistani knows by name is load shedding. On the surface, load shedding looks simple. Bijli comes for an hour, goes for an hour. But behind that on-off cycle sits a whole national system. Demand peaks when air conditioners switch on at 2 pm in Karachi. Supply depends on water in Tarbela for hydel, gas pressure for thermal, and dollar reserves for imported coal. WAPDA matches supply to demand by cutting power to feeders one by one, in an order set by their priority. Industrial feeders, hospital feeders, residential feeders, and rural feeders are not equal. When supply falls short, your gali sits in the dark while the FIA building stays lit. The hour you experience is the small visible end of a system whose other end stretches all the way to a coal ship docking in Port Qasim.
A smaller system, closer to home. The lunch dabba supply chain in your school. At seven in the morning, your mother packs four parathas, two boiled eggs, a small box of achar, and a bottle of water. The dabba lives in your bag for three hours through Urdu, maths, and Islamiat. At ten thirty, the school's dabba network kicks in. The taandoor uncle outside the gate has fresh roti for those whose dabba was light. The chips wala has clear orders from kids who threw away the boiled eggs. The boy in your row trades his apple for your achar. By eleven the dabba is empty, the trades are done, and the network of small exchanges has kept fifteen hundred children fed without any teacher writing a plan. Each part of this system is small. Together, they feed the school every day.
A third example, less visible but more important to most readers. The Pakistani family decision system. A daughter wants to apply to a university in Lahore. She does not say it to her father directly. She says it to her mother. The mother does not say it to the father directly either, she mentions it casually to the eldest paternal uncle. The uncle drops it into a Friday lunch when the father is in a good mood. The father appears to decide alone the next morning. From the outside, it looks like the father decided. From the inside, the decision moved through five people across three days, each adding weight or removing it. Pakistani family decisions are systems. Anyone who treats them as the choice of one person, including the person who thinks they decided, has misread the system.
What this five lesson run has given you. You can now name an algorithm when you see one, recognise data when it is being collected, see a network where others see only people, find a pattern inside a piece of cloth or a poem, and step back to read a whole system. These five ideas are the spine of the rest of your learning, in computer science, in data work, in artificial intelligence, in policy, in any field that touches more than one person.
