What Is A Network

A network is a set of points and the connections between them. Nothing more. The points can be people, computers, cities, telephones, or houses. The connections can be roads, wires, friendships, kinship, or radio signal…

A network is a set of points and the connections between them. Nothing more. The points can be people, computers, cities, telephones, or houses. The connections can be roads, wires, friendships, kinship, or radio signals. Once you see the world this way, networks show up everywhere. The GT Road from Peshawar to Lahore to Wagah is a network. The cities are the points. The road, with its dhabas and tolls and weighbridges, is the connection. A truck driver who knows where to stop for chai, where to refuel, and where the police check vehicles, is using the network. A network is not a thing you build once. It is a thing that grows, breaks, repairs, and reroutes around blockages.

The first computer network most Pakistani families touched was PTCL. A copper wire ran from the exchange in your mohalla to a junction box on the pole, then to your house. From there to the heavy black telephone on the side table. To call your phupho in Quetta, your phone reached the local exchange, the local exchange reached the trunk line to Quetta, the trunk line reached her local exchange, her exchange reached her phone. Five hops, all wire, all decided by humans plugging cables. The network worked because every link was kept honest, and because there was a clear path. When a wire was cut, the call dropped. The same shape, just faster and wireless, is what your Jazz or Telenor or Zong call uses today.

A network most Pakistanis live inside without naming. Sit at a chacha's wedding and watch the seating. The bride's khaala on one side, the groom's pupho on the other, second cousins clustered, the family friend who is in every photo because his father studied with the dulha's uncle in Lahore in the eighties. If you drew lines between every person who knows how every other person is related, you would have a graph denser than most computer networks. This kinship graph decides who gets a rishta proposal, who gets a job referral, who lends two lakh in an emergency, who attends whose janaaza. The country has more than two hundred million such relationships. They form the oldest, slowest, and most powerful network most Pakistanis will ever use.

Two ideas every network shares. First, every network has hubs. Hubs are the points with many connections. In a kinship graph, the hub is usually the eldest woman who remembers everyone. In the GT Road network, the hub is Lahore. In the internet, hubs are the data centres in Karachi and Islamabad and the undersea cables landing in Karachi. Most traffic flows through few points. Second, every network has a fragile spot. If the hub goes down, large parts of the network stop working. When a flood cut the GT Road in 2010, trade between Punjab and KP slowed for weeks. When a fibre cable in the Red Sea was damaged, internet across Pakistan got slower for days. Knowing the hubs and the fragile spots is half the work of understanding any network.

Why this matters. Every important system in your life is a network you have not yet seen as one. Your school is a network of teachers and students and parents. Your bank is a network of branches and ATMs and the central system in Karachi. Your social media is a network of accounts following accounts. The first move toward understanding any of them is to ask, what are the points, what are the connections, where are the hubs, and where would it break. Once you can answer those four questions, you can begin to design networks rather than just sit inside them.
