Practical exercise

Clap four rhythm patterns, record each

Music does not start with an instrument; it starts with the body. Every dhol player learnt to clap before they touched a stick. Today you will clap four very different rhythm patterns, record each one on your phone for thirty seconds, and listen back. The point is to feel that rhythm is countable, not magic. Once it is countable, you can write any pattern you hear.

Stretch

Try recording your favourite pattern with two friends or siblings clapping along. Three hands clapping the same pattern locks tighter than one. Listen back; the energy in the recording is noticeably bigger.

Goes into your portfolio

A folder of four 30 second audio recordings (4-4, kabaddi, sevens, free) named clearly, plus a small written note saying which pattern moved your body most and why you think so.
