Practical exercise

Record an oral history from one elder

History stops being a textbook the moment you hear it from someone who lived it. Today you find one elder in your family or muhalla, sit with them for an hour, and record their memories of 1947 or, if they are too young for that, of 1971 or General Zia or 2005 earthquake. The aim is not journalism. The aim is to make the past stop being abstract.

Record an oral history from one elder

Stretch

Translate one paragraph of their account into English and one paragraph into Urdu. Submit both to your local newspaper's letters section, or to a Pakistani oral history archive like the Citizens Archive of Pakistan in Karachi. CAP accepts submissions free of charge and digitises stories for permanent preservation.

Goes into your portfolio

A 500 word written account of one elder's memory, with their first name (or pseudonym if they prefer), the date of recording, and one verbatim quote in their own words. Add a one paragraph reflection: what changed in your understanding of Pakistan after the conversation.
