Three ways to see it
If you are a federal secretary, a bank vice president, or a corporate head of strategy in Karachi or Islamabad, you are almost certainly going to make a choice in the next six months about which AI assistant your team will pay for. The vendor will send a glossy deck. The deck will say their product is the most advanced and most affordable, which is what every deck says. This lesson exists to give you the underlying picture, without the deck. Four companies dominate the LLM landscape in 2026: Anthropic with Claude, OpenAI with ChatGPT, Google with Gemini, and Meta with Llama. They are not interchangeable. They have personalities, prices, and political baggage, and a professional in Pakistan needs to know which is which.
Anthropic and Claude. Anthropic was founded in 2021 by former OpenAI researchers who left over disagreements about safety. The company has built its brand around the idea that AI should be cautious by default and useful in long, careful work. Claude is known for two things: long context windows, currently up to one million tokens in the Claude Sonnet line, which means you can paste in an entire procurement file and ask questions about it, and a writing style that is dry, careful, and resistant to flattery. Federal officials and lawyers tend to prefer Claude because it sounds like a serious junior officer rather than a salesman. Pricing is at the high end of the market. Anthropic has no free public tier of the most capable model, though it offers limited free use of smaller models through claude dot ai.
OpenAI and ChatGPT. OpenAI is the company that introduced the modern AI chatbot to the world in November 2022 and remains the most recognisable name in the field. ChatGPT now refers to a family of models, with GPT-5 the current flagship as of the time of writing. The product has the largest free user base in the world, the deepest integration with Microsoft Office through Microsoft Copilot, and the strongest brand recognition among non-technical Pakistani staff. Almost every junior employee in Pakistan who has ever used AI has used ChatGPT first. The flip side: OpenAI has had repeated public controversies about safety, internal governance, and the firing and rehiring of its chief executive. For a government client thinking about reputational risk this matters.

Quick check: what makes modern AI different from a rule-based program?
The why-tree
Three ways to choose. By latency, pick the model whose data centre is closest to your users. Google and Anthropic both have regional endpoints; OpenAI runs most traffic through the United States. By cost, smaller models inside each family (Claude Haiku, GPT-5 mini, Gemini Flash, Llama 3.1 8B) cost roughly one tenth of the flagships and are good enough for most office tasks. By capability, the flagships of all four families are very close on English reasoning; the gap is in Urdu fluency and image understanding, where Gemini currently leads.
